Toilets Toilets: Cleaning toilets with Borax

Submitted by Jess Wilkinson

For cleaning toilets, many people either dislike the smell of bleach or are concerned about the damage it does to the environment. Most toilet cleaners are liquid, containing water as well as a cocktail of chemicals, which get further diluted when added to the bowl. Instead, sprinkle borax around the bowl and leave it to ‘work’ for an hour or overnight. It will remove stains and deodorise the toilet.

You can also add other natural ingredients such as white vinegar or lemon juice to help remove any limescale build up. Scrubbing with a toilet brush will be particularly effective as the borax is both mildly abrasive and has a gentle bleaching action.
