Brushing teeth with bar soap, tastes bad but works well...

Submitted by Shannon

I read online that if you can bear the bad flavor, brushing your teeth with a regular unscented bar soap can kill all germs and remove all plaque and tartar that ordinary tooth paste cannot remove.

It is also supposed to help your teeth to remineralize because they have no residue on them, supposedly tooth paste has tons of glycerin in it ,which sticks to your teeth even if you rinse vigorously after you brush.
Also tooth paste contains fluoride which is supposedly toxic if used in large quantities.

I've tried it for two weeks now (bar soap) ,and I must day my gums are so much healthier looking and my teeth are cleaner and whiter (like 3 shades already).

I went to the dentist two days ago for my yearly cleaning, and I had no plaque! He was impressed at how clean my teeth were.

I have even gotten to where I do not really taste the soap, I think it is because I chose to use DOVE bar soap ...
I just wet my brush and rub it on the soap a few times and brush I try to avoid getting the soap on my tongue, so i do not taste it.

My sister and my sister's husband are also doing this now, and they agree it works really well.

I recommend to anyone who is not closed minded and is willing to research the matter before they pass judgment.

If you go on yahoo type "soap as tooth paste" and you will see all the many articles that come up, so you can decide if this is for you, yourself.

If you like the idea but cannot stand the bad taste, there are flavored tooth soaps available online in flavors like spearmint and cinnamon, They are about 20 bucks but supposedly last an entire year for most people.

I also read that if you take lots of vitamin c and calcium that is also supposed to help your teeth and gums.To stay healthy.

There is only oneword for the results I recieved after ONE application, wow, I was amazed my teeth felt cleaner than ever before and if you use Zest soap it really doesn't taste that bad and if you can't stand the taste then use listerine right after. It was funny, I wlked down into our basement (before rinsing) and gargled to my mom "I think i might be sick" she started freaking out and I couldn't helpbut laugh i think thats the only risk lol! well as long as you don'tswallow it.

Dentist thinks I'm nuts Comments By: Anon on 2006-10-12
I just got new partials, and she told me to use a mild soap and toothbrush to keep my partials clean. I told her that I brush my teeth with regular Camay Classic. She got all over my case and said, "Keep that bar of soap out of your mouth, you're supposed to use floride." I told her that I had already aquired a taste for soap and can't stand the taste of toothpaste.

Better than toothpaste Comments By: Dante on 2007-07-09
I just did it five minutes ago and I have to say that my teeth feel cleaner. And this may sound strange, but I like the taste of Dove unscented better than any tooth paste I have ever had (I hate that sugary taste in the morning). I even brushed my tongue with it and didn't mind the taste. It was the first time that my mouth has felt clean by brushing at home. It astounds me that I have never thought of it since I used to get my mouth washed out with soap as a kid and never really minded the punishment. If you are worried about swallowing it, don't, because (and I can tell you this by experience) it is a mild laxative. It can only help!

Kills germs so no bad breath Comments By: RPM on 2007-10-06
I brush my teeth and tongue with liquid soap. I even suck on a dove soapy wash rag in the shower and swish the soap around in my mouth. It really makes my mouth and breath taste sweat.

ivory Comments By: anon on 2007-10-31
Ivory var soap, or any pure "old-fashined soap" made from hyrodlized fats.

Detergents Comments By: Anonymous on 2008-01-16
I believe Ivory and Dove aren't soap, they are detergents. The point is to use natural soap. Careful with using stuff like Dove in your mouth!

don't brush too hard Comments By: faye on 2008-01-19
I have been brushing w/soap now for 2 months and LOVE the way my teeth and mouth feel so clean. I kind of got carried away though with the nice clean feeling and started brushing TOO hard and TOO often (like 8 times a day) and now my gums are receeding, and my teeth are very sensitive. I am going to start trying to repair that with the Vitamin C & baking soda mixture. I HOPE IT WORKS!

brushing with soap Comments By: anon on 2008-01-27
It does work rather well, compared to toothpaste. It might take some getting used to as far as taste goes.

Olive oil soap Comments By: Kenton on 2008-01-28
I use Kiss My Face brand olive oil soap (the plain kind) There's nothing in it but Sponified olive oil, water, and salt. Works great and doesn't taste bad either.

IMPORTANT: When choosing a bar soap make sure it doesn't list 'glycerin' as one of the ingredients ottherwise you may as well be using toothpaste.

Glycerin Comments By: BryanEL on 2008-02-05
Doesn't soap have glycerin in it as well? Well, I thought that most of it did. I'm still going to try it. I have brushed rigorously throughout my life and have found toothpaste to be abrasive when combined with the pressure of the brush.

Woops Comments By: BryanEL on 2008-02-05
I read a little further and found the answer. Thx.

New to this Comments By: sarah on 2008-02-16
I actually just tried this morning after coming across the idea about glycerine not good for the enamel.

I used dove soap and it didn't taste nasty - my teeth feel squeaky clean!

Honesty Comments By: Abi on 2008-02-17
Does this really work? Because i have been getting quite upset about my teeth and how they look and i would do anything to make them perfect.

Use non glycerin soap Comments By: Luke on 2008-02-24
I read on another website not to use glycerin, and after LOTS of searching, I found a local health shop and bought a bar of soap that contains just olive oil, mineral salts and something else for only £0.79. The taste is bearable... but the absence of glycerin will certainly prove to be worthwhile!

I add a bit of laundry soap... much cleaner Comments By: Steve on 2008-03-23
I've been using soap for years...

now with the laundry soap my breath stays fresh for days...

I also use diswasher soap but it is more abrasive.. Unscented laundry and Ivroy bar soap is the best.

It really works!

Burt's Bees Natural Soap Comments By: Terry Morr on 2008-06-04
I've just started brushing my teeth with soap...3 days now...and already impressed. Use a soft toothbrush; wet it and then swipe the brush over the bar of soap 2 or 3 times. Very mild soap taste. Rinse 2 or 3 times. Mouth feels so fresh and good. Toothpaste companies won't like us!

natural Comments By: Anon on 2008-07-06
Store bought bar soaps are detergents -- they're not good for your body, they also are not good for your teeth.

If you'd like to brush with soap, use homemade soaps or buy a bar from someone else who made it -- those are not detergents, but real old fashioned soap.
They clean your teeth just as well, but don't have any taste to them.

Don't use Dove! Comments By: Heidi on 2008-07-23
Dove is not "real" soap. Dove is classified as a "cleansing bar" because it contains petroleum based detergents, not soap. If you want to get the best benefits for your teeth you need to use a natural soap bar or liquid soap that is unscented or uses essential oils. There are soap makers all over the world (the handcrafted soaper's guild is a good resource so is www.etsy.com) who would be willing to sell you a nice bar of soap for an average of $1 an oz that you can shred up or rub your toothbrush on. Whole Foods chains carry a ton of peppermint or cinnamon bar soaps, but it is nice to patronize local soapers. Dr.Bronners is also a good source, though it may have added glycerine...It has been a long time since I have looked at the label. You want a bar made from quality vegetable oils (like coconut, olive, palm ...not lard, or tallow- another ingredient in Dove), that does not have added glycerine, artificial sweeteners, or abrasive additives like silica. Hope this is helpful....

soap for teeth Comments By: anon on 2008-07-26
I have recently been using a tooth soap product produced by a crafter in the US call "Tooth Chips", it's soap but without glycerin and other addditives. The chips are available in several flavors. I bought spearmint. My teeth are a lot whiter and my mouth feels so clean plus it does have a slight minty flavor. I have read that bar soap is better for your teeth and have spent thousands in dental work over the years, I wish I had known this before...

Where do you get unscented dove soap? I use the dove bath soap but have never seen the unscented type.

Soap's great !! Comments By: Sudzy on 2008-08-13
I've been brushing with soap for the last 3 years and my teeth & gums feel great. Just as long as you stay away from transparent glycerin soaps like Pears, just use regular white bathing soap. Much better than toothpaste, since it kills all the bacteria. Although, brushing with toothpaste once or twice a week is a good idea if you want your teeth to be pearly white. It's because soap isn't the least bit abrasive and has no fluoride, which is necessary if you want your teeth to be dazzling.

it actually works!! Comments By: gadise on 2008-08-20
i tried it ten minutes ago it works

Been brushing with soap over 30 years. Comments By: Vince on 2008-08-27
I love the taste of soap, Irish spring, Leaver-2000 and dial are my favorites. Not very good for beople with sensitive teeth. Didn't seem to bother my dentist when I told him. Checkups all good.

It really works!!!!! Comments By: Cazabandango on 2008-09-09
I have tried Dove sensitive soap, which is un-scented. It does not taste that bad, and i have noticed a big difference in the way my teeth feel, they sparkle and are getting whiter. I tried whitening toothpase before, and actually my gums were coming away from my teeth, i found out this was due to abbrasion products in the toothpaste and it was wearing away the enamel on my teeth. I stopped using it and bought Dove un-scented soap, and ive had no bleeding gums or sensitive teeth anymore, I couldnt even eat ice cream my teeth were so sensitive.
I recommend for any1 to try this and post comments on how they get on.

Which soap O_o? Comments By: Steph on 2008-09-10
A lot of you are just using Dove, and some of you are saying we shouldnt use Dove as it is not natural enough. I want to try out this soap method but i don't know what to get now lol Shall i try the Dove or go to the soap shop that has tons of different natural soaps. My teeth are weak and toothpaste (ive tried them all) doesnt seem to make a damm bit of difference :(

Dove soap isn't soap, it's a surfactant Comments By: Christian on 2008-09-16
It's really not "soap" you're using in the traditional sense. It's different detergents which is why your teeth are so white, they clean surface stains.

Soap memories! Comments By: Gina-Nicole Smith on 2008-09-29
I am so surprised and how nice my mouth feels. I use Ivory bar soap (just like mom did) but since I don't have to swallow it, it wasn't bad at all. I feel very clean and I will never go back to tooth paste again!

Use natural coconut or olive oil soap Comments By: anon on 2008-10-18
I have been brushing my teeth with soap for years and find that my teeth and mouth always feels cleaner than with toothpaste. You get used to the taste after awhile. I use soap from Bella Terra Products on Etsy. They have pure natural coconut soap and olive oil soap. It works great for teeth!

Antifreeze works well and tastes better than ivory Comments By: Job on 2008-11-01
I can't stand swallowing soap juice either. Antifreeze and soap are poison fools

Natural Soap and Detergent bars are dangerously different! Comments By: Jayne on 2008-11-02
I'm a natural soap maker and i'm alarmed that you could put a toxic chemical detergent bar in your mouth in preference to a toxic chemical toothpaste. REAL SOAP is not detergent or cancer causing (unlike petro-chemical detergent bar) however ALL real soap contains naturally retained glycerin as a by product of saponification and will not be listed as an added ingredient. The amount contained will be small though. Real soap can be enhanced with the therapeutic properties of essential oils and would be of benefit to oral health. Liquid vs. Solid? Both the same as long as they are REAL SOAP. Just a different alkaline used in the process to produce a softer soap. PLEASE DON'T USE DETERGENT...However i am gonna try real soap tho and may well make one specially for teeth =D

Use Cal Ben 5 star soap Comments By: Roderick Jones on 2008-11-14
In my humble opinon one of the purest soaps available is from an American company called Cal Ben 5 star soap. The man that runs it started the company with his father in the late 1940's after leaving the US army. He worked with the CHEMICAL WEAPONS division. When he tells you that most soaps and detergents are posionous to the body and these chemicals are a by product of chemical weapon research and the chemical industry he knows what he's talking about. The web site even advises the use of their soaps for teeth as there only ingrediants their bar soap contains are white vegitable tallow (?) and coconut oils. What more can you ask for?

Regards
Roderick from England.

SOAP TO BRUSH TEETH Comments By: DIGNA on 2008-11-19
I HAVE TRIED IT BUT THE SOAP I USED HAD AN AWEFUL TASTE BUT MY MOUTH DONT SMELL OF BILLY GOAT LOL SO TRY IT AND DOES OF YOU ALL WITH THIS BILLY BREATHE TRY IT OK IF U CANT AFFORD TOOTH PASTE

Soap has glycerin too, though. Comments By: Yancy on 2008-11-24
But you're forgetting that soap has glycerin in it, too. It's a byproduct of the chemical process and it's really obvious if you've ever made your own soap at home.

rinsing soap out of mouth Comments By: oldbiker1 on 2008-11-30
this is one of those "secrets" that the dentists and the ADA don't tell you about -- much better than toothpaste. But, how to get soap residue out of your mouth? Rinse out with apple cider vinegar (dilute with a little water)-- vinegar neutralizes the soap -- then your mouth is super clean.

Look at ingredients Comments By: ads on 2008-12-14
It should just be saponized(sp?) oil or fat, and salt
Don't use commercial soaps like dove or irish spring - bad idea.
I use kiss my face olive oil soap.
you can find it in most stores.

Read Soap Ingredients Before You Brush! Comments By: Anon on 2009-01-01
If you are going to make the switch to brushing with soap or have recently started, please DO NOT brush with Dove, Zest or any commercial bar soaps or any kind of liquid soap! Nearly all of these soaps contain harsh chemicals and detergents that are as bad or worse as brushing your teeth with regular toothpaste. If you shouldn't use it on your teeth, you shouldn't use it on your skin either (I can't recommend buying handmade soaps enough!).

Read soap ingredients carefully. Choose a soap that has saponified oils in it (a good quality olive oil soap will work) but it's also important for the health of your teeth that the soap has some essential oils to not only help with the taste, but also aid in the re-enamelization process and certain oils also help draw out toxins from your gums and protect against bacteria.

There are a handful of sellers on Etsy.com that make handmade tooth soap for very reasonable prices compared to other options you will find online.

Also, be wary if you are using or were thinking about switching to Dr. Bronner's soap. I am almost out of my current tooth soap (purchased from BeautifulSoaps on Etsy) and was considering switching to Dr. Bronners but after reading the ingredients decided against it. The one ingredient that kept me from choosing that soap was citric acid, which they use as a preservative. But from having read Dr. Gerard Judd's book Good Teeth, Birth to Death - I am aware that acid is what decays the teeth and causes cavities not sugar. Even though I would be rinsing after brushing, I would rather not brush with an acid when there are other alternatives out there.

Good luck on your quest for a great tooth soap and enjoy the squeaky clean feeling that you won't get with any toothpaste!

Only use the right kind of soap!!! Comments By: ana on 2009-01-02
you guys, use ALL NATURAL soap.

like olivia care, castile soaps...not DOVE or any commercial soaps. those will RUIN your teeth.

do not try to substitute real natural soap with synthetic harmful soaps.

A Mouthsoaper AND Soapmaker's Comments..... Comments By: Darren David Martin on 2009-01-05
Been a mouth soaper all my life and make my own soaps (not usually for sale though
although I have sold some over the yrs) so I figured I'd make a few comments to the list.

As a mouth soaper, (For fun and disipline too) I've used many kinds over the yrs commercial kinds, while keeping in mind the ingredients AND the ph levels. Some are so alkilie (Irish Spring, Zest, Dial,Lever 2000, Camay, etc.) that I wouldn't use them on my worst friend, then there are the saponified kind like Carress, Dove, Olay, and the like. Well, ok; BUT
I've been making my own for years (Learned from Mom & G. Mom) and using Virgin Olive and Canola Oils in the soaps make for better quality soaps that are not only last longer & are not only better for the skin but better for both mouth soaping AND tooth care. AND using only natural oils and flavors in them makes them taste pretty good too. I currently have about 15 different kinds in different stages of curing (aging) in a controled room.

As for swallowing the soap? So what. Great for the lack of constipation. And if you don't swallow alot of it it won't make you sick to your tummy either and the flavors are'nt too bad either.

As for liquid soaps/shampoos: LOOK @ the ingredient list FIRST before you try it. Not anything I would want in my mouth. Body Washes are no better. Some of the chemicals are TOXIC if taken internally in any amounts.

If you want to use liquid soaps, make them out of bar soaps. It's not hard and works well. Just mix the grated/powered soap with a good quality olive oil (which makes it a great and cheap body wash for all over the skin. Just try not to use a cream base unless you have really dry skin.)

Also, try to keep away from a hard bristled tooth brush. can & will damage the teeth and gums.

The last thing I would like to say is BRUSH THE TONGUE TOO, if you can stand the taste, and even if you can't. 85-90% of the germs that grow in the mouth are growing on the tongue. THat also accounts for what is forming bad breath; it's the gunk on the tongue. Brush that tongue. you'll be pleasantly suprised with the results.

Just a few comments from a regular soap user till I die. BTW, my dentist has always been "Suprised" at how well my mouth hygene has been all these yrs. Should I tell him the REAL TRUTH?

very interesting Comments By: Amy on 2009-03-30
I've been sick for years, and so my teeth have taken a beating. I am consuming more fruits and veggies than ever before, raw ones I mean! And really want to have healthy teeth. Mine have been pretty sensitive. I had a TERRIBLE time finding the "right" bar soap to get for this!!!

Our nearest health store is a ways away and I haven't had much time to get there, so I've been looking at soaps online. I bought one yesterday, and then realized today that it isn't unscented and was just reading that there shouldn't be a fragrance, so, I just ordered a different one from a diff. website that's unscented and has several oils in it so I sure hope it'll work fine and not hurt my teeth :/

I'm tired of toothpaste!!! I'm so excited to try this and I hope it really works!! I go to the dentist on April 20th and I've been concerned about that ha.

Thanks for all the comments!! I can't wait to try this!!!!!!!!!!!!! And to be healthier and feel healthier, but I'm glad God has brought me through this, because I've learned SO SO SO much that I never could have learned otherwise.

Take care all, God bless!

Here's to good dental health! ^_^

no more pain Comments By: RYNO on 2009-06-08
I have been doing this for about 3 months now, and it works great. My parents think I'm nuts, but I think I almost have my wife doing it. Also I had a pain in my back wisdom tooth so bad I had to take about 4 advils a day, I went to the dentist he said I had some tooth decay and that the tooth would have to come out eventually. My friend told me about the soap thing the next day when i was complaining about my tooth, the pain starting slowly going away. The pain was gone by about a week. Explain that to all you naysayers. It makes you think what they have us believing what is good for us to put in our mouths. Think about it.

There Is A Safer Way Comments By: obsessed with having a clean mouth on 2009-06-18
If people are desperate to escape commercial toothpastes (you know, those approved by the ADA that contain SLS, flouride and other synthetic chemicals that can cause mouth sores, bad breath and cancer), please consider a natural tooth soap. These are manufactured with all natural ingredients like saponified olive and sesame seed oils and baking soda. They are also available in great tasting flavors from traditional mint to spunky strawberry lime. They will clean your teeth and draw out toxins that commercial toothpastes cannot do. Also if you purchase one that is a bar, you won't waste as much product in overuse (or not being able to get it out of tube).

Commercial handsoaps are not any more natural or safe than commercial toothpastes since they are DETERGENT based! Please try a natural toothbrushing soap.

YOU PEOPLE ARE CRAZY!!! Comments By: DentalHygiene25 on 2009-06-16
I can't believe that you people are praising the use of BODY/DISH SOAP IN THE ORAL CAVITY. Not only is this ridiculous but it is DANGEROUS to your body and your oral tissues! Ive been researching this abnormal habit as I am in the dental field and the results are astounding. THIS IS NOT HEALTHY. THIS SOAP STRIPS ALL THE GOOD BACTERIAS AND PROTEINS FROM YOUR MOUTH AND SALIVA AND CAN PERMINENTLY DAMAGE YOUR TEETH. Its even said to cause ORAL CANCER! This is ridiculous and not approved or condoned by and dental association on earth or anyone in the healthcare profession. ITS UNSAFE. PLEASE BE CAREFUL!!!

Anythings better than flouride! Comments By: balickibone on 2009-07-03
I havent tried this but i will! I will try anything if it gets me out of having more flouride in my diet! Flouride is very bad for you if you keep having it in your diet. It makes your bones weak and also damages your brain. Theres loads on the internet about it.

Tooth soap rocks! Comments By: flameonglass on 2009-07-16
I heard so much about this on a forum I go to that I had to try it. I have been using it for only a few days but I am just amazed at how clean it gets my teeth & how much I actually enjoy using it. I went on etsy.com & found a bunch of different sellers who had it. I don't think it matters who you buy it from but I would think that the soap that is made for teeth is nicer than just regular soap.
(If you read the ingredients on a tube of toothpaste you might just get a little grosse out. Soap has very few ingredients.)

WHATS WRONG WITH YOU? Comments By: Anon on 2009-07-26
YOUR ALL MAD! this can give you CANCER! it strips all the good stuff off your teeth and stuff. i was reading this and i said to my mum 'does brushing your teeth with soap make your teeth whiter?' and she said NO. DONT TRY IT. IT CAN BE TOXIC. and i was like :O. so your all INSANE. i should know she used to be a dentist.

mouthwash Comments By: ade young on 2009-08-06
can anyone tell me if using mouthwash after brushing with soap is ok?
worried if there's some sort of chemical reaction.

ADA Approved! Comments By: ADA Approved on 2009-08-24
Do Not Use Commercial Soap Products to clean your teeth. In fact, don't use commercial soap products to clean your body. Most of them are full of detergent and dangerous chemicals like SLS. The ADA approves toothpastes because it's all money. They also will approve natural alternatives. I'm not going to scream at you like our know-it-all here who thinks he's a dentist because his mom used to be one. I will tell you that there are natural, kind and effective products out there that will clean your teeth and make you healthier! Do not use commercial products. Find good, safe ones. I'll give you a hint: the good, safe ones aren't made by Crest or Colgate. Hahaha

Soapmouth Comments By: Star on 2009-08-29
I have been using soap for months now. I started off with a Burt's Bees vegetable soap, and now I am using Dial antibacterial soap; I did it because once I read that some dentists say a toothbrush is all the abrasion you need, and toothpaste can be a little too abrasive. Fluoride, I don't miss it; I get my fluoride from public water.

My tea drinking stains my teeth, and soap brushing won't get rid of stains as well as toothpaste can, so once a week, or when I need it, I use a whitening toothpaste. And an orange-flavored mouthwash, because mint flavoring doesn't mix with soap flavor.

Handmade Soap Only Comments By: Anon on 2009-09-04
Use NATURAL HANDMADE SOAP! OLIVE OIL or a SOAP or POWDER made for BRUSHING TEETH! SAFER THAN TOOTHPASTE AND COMMERCIAL SOAP. AND YOU CAN GET THEM IN YUMMY FLAVORS THAT MASK THE TASTE OF SOAP!

this sounds great and i might try it. i have dove soap so is that safe to use? i dont want to damage my teeth anymore but will try anything to whiten them.

works great but do not use for a long time Comments By: asian on 2009-11-30
the first thing got to do is to use it until your teeth get white then start using regular toothpaste again so the soap doesnt cause cancer .but yeah it does work!!!

Best commercial soap Comments By: Chris on 2009-12-04
The best commercial soap to use is IVORY. It's the closest to natural soap and has NO GLYCERIN. It's hard to find the ingredients list for Ivory even if you call them, here it is:

Sodium tallowate, sodium cocoate or sodium palm kernelate, water, sodium chloride, sodium silicate, magnesium sulfate, and fragrance. (This information is from the Material Safety Data Sheet prepared by the Proctor & Gamble Company.)

Notice no glycerin! No glycerin means its good to use on your teeth but if you shower with this soap your skin will be dry as hell, but I've showered with it for years just use lotion that's what it's for.

Dentists just pass on their brainwashing Comments By: cyndi on 2010-01-23
dentists just pass on their brainwashing they were brainwashed with. they gave fluoride to people in nazi germany, it also causes infertility and is toxic if swallowed. what's the difference, other than bar soap doesn't have that ingredient like toothpaste. and the bogus explanation that fluoride in water is good for teeth? please see these studies.
http://www.quantumbalancing.com/news/saveteeth.htm
the comments also show some dentists believe this should be taught in dental school look up dental book by "price" author.

Great Taste Comments By: Tara on 2010-01-31
I have been doing it for a couple of weeks and I use Original Irish spring which can taste really good.

As good as an expensive cleaning was.... Comments By: Jane on 2010-02-18
At first I thought this whole Dove soap-thing would be odd & probably not work. But I tried it AND
it works so well that my teeth look and feel as clean as when I had an expensive cleaning at the dentist. After using Crest mouthwash (blue) that stained my teeth brown in places, was so glad Dove took the staining off. Commercial teeth whitening toothpastes were irritating my gums so I am incredibly happy to find this alternative method with the Dove soap. I do want to try Ivory though as it sounds like perhaps a better choice.

DO NOT USE LIQUID SOAPS Comments By: City on 2010-02-26
As they are different.

Ivory is good Comments By: Bob on 2010-03-28
I bought the expensive Tooth Soap product and then read the label. It is made with saponified oils. It says it has no added glycerine, but my research finds that the type of soap used in this product comes with glycerine in it. I also looked at the Ivory bar ingredients and agree that it ought to be better since there is no glycerine listed. To me, it does not taste bad at all, and does as good a job as Tooth Soap, and I got 3 bars for $1.07! I also switched to using Ivory for hands and face since it has none of the toxic chemicals in it.

It Works Comments By: Mischka on 2010-03-31
I thought I wwas the only one who did this until I read this article, and I can say from past experience that this is very helpful. Do not use soaps with exfoliating beads because the beads will not help clean your teeth, but may cause small scratches in the enamel instead, leading your teeth to be more susceptible to plaque.

I'd advise Irish Spring, or a Dial soap, nothing with shae butter because it may have sugars in it that can cause damage to the teeth. Liquid soap works as well, but you mustn't use a knock-off "great value" brand, as it is ineffective. Liquid Dial Soap is decent enough to use.

Gonna try Comments By: flaab on 2010-04-21
I've had the same experiences with dentist, they don't know what they are selling.

I will try a natural pure glycerin-free and flavour free soap and tell you! :-D

it works... for sure.... Comments By: oldbiker1 on 2010-04-24
I read about this a couple years ago and have been doing it ever since - teeth always feel clean because they are. But, don't use commercial bar soap - get some natural type like Dr. Bronner's unscented bar soap. I wouldn't go back to toothpaste for any reason -- it's not good for your teeth and gums.

Ivory Comments By: anon on 2010-05-13
I've been brushing with Ivory soap for 3 days, and my teeth have never been cleaner or my breath fresher. And how simple! I don't have to bring toothpaste when I travel. However, I noticed that glycerin, fragrance, and tetrasodium EDTA are actually listed right on the package as ingredients in Ivory soap. (I'm not sure why other people say it has no glycerin.) Now, EDTA has no carcinogenic properties (I've researched this), and it's a heavy metal chelator, so it might actually be beneficial. It's certainly safer than fluoride and sodium lauryl sulfate and MSG, which are in most toothpastes (yuck). Still, I'm going to look into affordable natural soap. As for using laundry detergent or dishsoap--disgusting! So is most commercial liquid soap: check the ingredients--it's the same as shampoo. On a sidenote I've also been using Ivory soap to wash my hair for 5 years now, and after making that switch my hair stopped falling out. Both toothpaste and shampoo are toxic.

Sucess! Comments By: Leo Cress on 2010-05-14
Wow! this really works! i tried it like 5 min. ago with all natural soap and it actually makes my teeth feel a whole lot cleaner! :) TRY IT!

Not Sure About This Comments By: Skeptical on 2010-05-15
I tried this a few times and it just sickens my stomach. The Ivory really makes me nauseous. Dial has a mild tase but I still get sick. I don't know why since I'm careful not to swallow anything.

I will just stick with the toothpaste or gel since it is specially formulated for the teeth and mouth.

I will only do the soap option again if I'm stuck somewhere without toothpaste at hand.

Vegitable Glycerin Comments By: Carlos on 2010-07-07
Ok so went to a all natural store, and have a lot of selection on soap. I'm going to use Dr.bronners Because it has citric acid in it, if you think about it that is what oranges have, and make your teeth week. But i have been looking in all the soaps. And some don't have glycerin in it, but have olive oil's and other stuff in the soap kiss my face. But i have seen that coconut oil and palm oil work as for cleansing. So a few have glycerin in it. so i didn't get that. but the Grandpas Brand of natural soap has Vegitable Glycerin in it. But the thing is, is it the same as regular glycerin or doesn't make a difference. also has chlorophyll in it. With green tea extract. So I don'tknow and i bought it, but don't know if i will use it yet. Hmmm.

Dove has flouride in it!!! Comments By: Vigilantcitizen.com on 2010-07-11
You're right in saying that toothpastes have flouide in it (well most toothpastes) and that i'm assuming that this is partially a reason for brushing your teeth with soap. I'm baffled why you would use DOVE?! When Dove soap contains 'FLORIDE'.

Soap - go figure Comments By: Mikjayess on 2010-07-11
I've been doing this since March 2008. I didn't realize other people were doing it. It's logical, and obvious that soap will do the job. It cleans everything else with no problem, why not plaque? Duh!! Good job folks!

1st time and my teeth feel great! Comments By: Fran on 2010-07-14
I decided to try it 5mins ago and im astounded by the result! My teeth feel great and look whiter already (if that's possible) I thought i'd hate the taste, but sometimes you get as horrible tasting toothpaste, but you realize you soon get used to it. This shall be part of my daily routine for sure!

Using bar soap Comments By: Pamela on 2010-08-03
I have been using Ivory Soap for years, and wouldn't use anything else. Also, my mom has used this for over 70 years; she is now 95, and still has all her teeth. I am convinced.

TJ Comments By: TJ on 2010-08-17
I have sensitive skin. Any product with fragrance or dyes will aggravate my skin. I will break out with a rash or my skin will dry and crack open, with itching sores. This is very uncomfortable, miserable, and very painful.

The Made from Earth soaps I have found, that will not irritate or increase the pain of an already painful situation. I have used their Citrus Lavender and their Peppermint Parsley Soap.

The Citrus Lavender soap is so gentle I even used it on my small son without any worries of it causing skin irritation. He is now seven and has no problems with sensitive skin, THANK GOD!

I recently recommended Made from Earth to a new mother. Her infant daughter was breaking out in a rash all over her tiny body from something the mother was using on her. With the change of soap and lotion the infant is now rash free and absolutely adorable.

It is possible to absorb toxins through skin. Comments By: amalhator on 2010-10-01
If something is toxic to ingest or put in mouth, it can also be absorbed through your skin.

brushing with soap is for the stupid Comments By: EDV on 2010-10-25
You don't need to put ANYTHING on your brush...it's not the soap or toothpaste that cleans your teeth, it's the brushing part. And THAT'S also the reason you should brush at least 2 minutes. It's hardly possible to do it faster and still get clean teeth. Toothpaste makes is better tasting so you'll be more likely to do it. In that light it's rather stupid to be using soap since it does not do anything to help clean your teeth but make them tast awful

To all you naysayers. TRY it first Comments By: Tami-Lynn [ Just another Mouth Soaper ] on 2010-12-13
Ok, to all you "Nay-sayers" "I" say GET A GRIP, QUIT WHINING AND TRY IT FIRST before you "Poo-poo" it.

Me and my partner of over 30+ yrs have been using Bar soap [Made from Earth Peppermint Parsley Soap; Dove Pink, Classic White; Olay Classic; Clinique Basic; Caress Glowing touch and Nu-Skin bar soaps] for over 30 years to brush our teeth with. Never had any problems at all. Of course there are ALLOT of bar soaps we will NOT use because they are too alkili which does not help with the teeth or mouth hygine but we both have been doing the ole once a yr dentist thing and although he does not "Recommend" bar soap, he is not suprised by our reasons or the great results. Our daughter now 24 is also a bar soap user liking the natural bar soaps we make ourselves to the comercial ones, but again, she sha a nice set of "Pearly-Whites" to show for the use of bar soap.

One other thing; to all of you who do not like the "Taste" of bar soap: suffer for half a minute and BRUSH OFF THE TONGUE !!!!!! That is where MOST of the germs in the mouth live AND what is responsable for most BAD BREATH. Don't believe me, research it out.

We all even use it to "Punish" on another if anyone is caught using "Potty-mouth" language. [ Yeah, kinky u might say, but THAT'S another subject AND keeps the use of foul language down. LOL]

Whiter and Cleaner Comments By: Willy white teeth on 2011-01-24

Yes, I use Bar Soap as Toothpaste Comments By: Karen on 2011-01-25
I only use homemade olive oil soap with Neem oil and Xylitol flavored with peppermint oil and it does a wonderful job of keeping my tooth clean and white. It only has natural ingredients so it's good for my teeth. I also make a tooth powder (baking soda, sea salt, xylitol and stevia) that I use as a toothpaste (kind of like a prewash). =) I'm a believer!!

I do this too! Comments By: Windy on 2011-02-24
I use liquid Ivory soap, I dont use water on my brush first I put the size of a small pea on my brush hold my head down so the siliva will drain out to the sink and not on my tongue. I also avoid getting the soap on my tongue, so I do not taste it. I do use toothpaste after wards since I love to brush my tongue too and have not gotten up the courage to use soap on my tongue LOL

It works! Comments By: Gert Bigguns on 2011-02-28
To hell with all the correct medical advice, I read all the comments on here and decided to take the plunge... and after throwing up at the taste of my Dove soap, I tried again and hurled one more time but i never give up and after being able to stand the taste and resist the urge to puke I managed to brush my teeth and they feel squeaky clean... why hasn't my dentist told me about this? is there a cancer risk? It's too good to be true. We should keep this to ourselves!

Use facial bar, reduce bad taste Comments By: jcook on 2011-03-11
I stumbled upon the idea to use my little facial bar soap by accident when traveling and forgot to pack paste. The taste was not that bad- DHC brand "mild soap" (I think it has honey as a humectant). Honey has some antibacterial properties too. I also tried neutrogena orignal bar. My teeth have never been cleaner! and I have much more confidence in my breath. No more morning mouth; I'm amazed!

not what u think---try it Comments By: Saoirse on 2011-03-15
beeen doing this for years with ivory bar soap after a trusted friend recommended it for both the teeth and dentures --and it works fine and you don't froth and foam either--if the dentures need a little "more"--i simply use baking soda to get the coffe/tea stains right off them easily.

Flouride Causes Cancer Comments By: Clean Jean on 2011-04-23
Yes. Soap does work. As far as the cancer thing I would not worry about it. Dentists and Doctors fail to mention that flouride in water and toothpaste causes cancer.

"Dial GOLD"??? Anyone ELSE heard of this? Comments By: #1 Queeen Of Cleeen on 2011-07-01
A Naturalpathic Dr. recently told me about brushing teeth the with DIAL SOAP... preferably Dial GOLD. She said the ingredients in THAT specific bar soap (besides allegedly being non-toxic) helps to rebuild the enamel on the teeth (which toothpaste wears away after a while). She mentioned that it whitens the teeth AND gets rid of plaque and tartar, without being abrasive. She also said it "reverses" the cavitation process (or gets rid of/prevents cavities), stops bleeding gums and gives the mouth a proper ph balance. I asked her if Dr. Bronners Peppermint soap would be better, since it IS more natural and she said She said she tried BOTH and while Dr. Bronners IS cool because of the mint taste, there is something in the Dial GOLD that has worked better for her teeth. As a Naturalpathic Dr. she said she WAS skeptical, at first but the results spoke for itself. She also shared that her (non-wholistic) DENTIST noticed the improvement of her teeth and how they are getting really white. The dentist is OBVIOUSLY open-minded, because when she revealed what she had been doing, he ADMITTED that flouride is NOT good AT ALL and she should keep doing 'the soap thing' since it's garnering such great results for the health of her teeth AND gums!!

I haven't used flouride toothpaste in over 20 years, only natural tooth products. I ALWAYS prefer/use NATURAL things. I've NEVER had cavities or tooth-related issues (except RECENTLY my gums have bled a little, but nothing severe).

Based on what this Naturalpathic Dr. said (AND after noticing the beautiful teeth she has), I've started researching this and I pledged to TRY it for 3 weeks, but I'm only ONE day in right now, lol!
I'll be back to share my results...

But my question to you all IS: Has anyone ELSE heard this about (specifically) the "Dial GOLD" bar soap??

-Peace.

Glycerin Comments By: Anon on 2011-07-06
I think this is a great idea and I'm going to try it, but i have researched online and it says that DOVE bar soap has glycerin in it, should i use DOVE or is there any other that you would recommend?
