Bored Kids. Summer Vacation – When Kids get Bored

School has been out for some time now, and the children are starting to seem a little bored about what it is that they really have to do around the house.

How are you going to handle their constant need to be entertained? What are you going to do when they want to leave the house or have friends over? Is there anything you can do to change their schedules to make summer more fun without having to spend too much money?

Let’s take a moment and discuss how you can brighten up your children’s summer, stimulate their minds, get them exercising and all without having to spend too much money.

Why are the kids getting bored anyway? Think about school for a second, the children are constantly on the go. They see their friends all the time and the teachers are keeping their day structured so their minds have little time to think about anything else besides learning.

You have to keep this same idea in your mind when you are scheduling what your children are going to do during their day. Sure, giving them some of their own free time is ‘only right’ but you also need a little structure to help you get through the summer with a little of your own sanity left at the same time.

How are you going to handle their constant need to be entertained?

This is going to be one of the most difficult things that you are faced with when your children start getting to be bored with their summer vacation. What you really need to do is make a listing of three things that each child should do in the house. Brush the dog, clean their room, clean their shoes, make their bed, walk the dog, feed the cat or what ever it may be. These are the structured part of your child’s day that will make them feel as if they are not so lost in their vacation world.

Another thing you can do to entertain your child is set a schedule for parks. Parks are free. State parks where lakes are located are also free. Make a schedule that every Thursday or Saturday you are going to the park. Take the bikes, the swimsuits, or a picnic basket and get out to another place.

You can visit a different surrounding park every week or if your family has a favorite, visit the same the same one, but making a particular day of it is going to add to the structure of your child’s life that they can look forward too.

A little structured fun is going to keep the children entertained more often than you might think, because even when they are having a bad boring day, they know they can look forward to going to the park, going swimming or seeing their friends on certain days of the week. Scheduled fun gives you time to figure out when you get your own things done.

Is there anything you can do to change their schedules to make summer more fun without having to spend too much money? When your children are young it is actually easier to accomplish having fun without spending too much money, but this does not mean that you have to spend more as they get older, you just have to find more creative ways of keeping their interest and having fun at the same time.

  • Go camping. Costs just a few dollars if you go to the park, or you can camp out in your backyard free.
  • Get out swimming. Swimming in the local town pools usually cost a few dollars, but you can go to the state parks usually free.
  • Fishing is always an alternative that does not cost a lot of money at all. If you have a method of finding worms, you do not have to pay anything to get out fishing!
  • Take the boat out for the day. You will have to put a few dollars into gas for the day but if you make sandwiches and take along your swim suits, the day doesn’t cost much at all.
  • Spend the day working in the garden together.
  • Spend the day visiting cousins where the kids are all the same age and the children can play together.

Make it a weekly activity to do something nice for someone else. This teaches the children to have fun while cheering someone else up that needs a little help in life at the same time. Walk someone’s dog, baby-sit other children, or even just take another person to the park with you that would not otherwise get out of the house for the summer.

Where else can you go to have a little fun during the summer without having to spend an arm and a leg to have fun? Try visiting arts and crafts fairs where children often get faces painted and balloons free. Make a listing of all the parades that are going to happen during the summer and make sure that you see all of them. Go to little league baseball games and watch the game, does not cost anything!

During the summer there are often programs run by the school that don’t cost anything. Sometimes it could be fun in reading, fun in math or fun for friends types of programs, but your children will gladly go because they will get to see their friends during the summer! Use your imagination and take the bikes for a five mile ride to a different location each week. Everyone will love the exercise and getting out of the house at the same time.
