There are many advantages to training your new puppy. Training him or her will make their life easier and yours simpler. Follow these steps and the training process will be a breeze.
Teach children to treat their new dog right--otherwise, they might get nipped by them or worse as they get older
Never HIT a puppy. He will grow up to think aggression is acceptable behavior
To teach a puppy to be gentle for the rest of his life, take treats out of their mouth constantly with the words share and make believe that YOU are eating it, so he knows that the family is his pack and to share, not snap or bite. This works like a charm! Even with children that my dogs have just met! If a child goes to give one of my dogs a piece of food, they gently take it from her.
Make sure he has plenty of toys and bones to chew on. NEVER give old sneakers or old personal items to puppies-what that does is tells him its OK to chew up ANY item that you have.
Teach him to sit, stay, down, all with commands and then give him a cookie (treat)
If you notice at all the dog shows, strangers are constantly putting their fingers and hands INSIDE the dogs mouths! That is how this is achieved. But, they still have ALL the instincts to protect your family. And actually you INCREASE a dogs willingness to protect you and your family, by teaching them what you want them to do (they love to please), and by being loving and responsible pet owners.
