Solvent-based, general-purpose adhesives are highly flammable, toxic and may be addictive when sniffed. Chemical-based adhesives (epoxy resins) are often stronger than the materials to be bonded and can be corrosive, poisonous and flammable. Many adhesives contain cyclic hydrocarbons, which have been linked with cancer.
Alternative
Water-based adhesives are taking the place of some traditionally solvent-based adhesives. Choose these where possible; not only are they safer, but they are also reversible. Make a non-toxic adhesive for children with flour and water. Use one part flour to two parts water, combine them in a saucepan, then simmer, stirring all the time, for five minutes. Allow to cool before using.
