Oil Paint . Tips to remove Oil Paint stains on clothes and fabrics

If you have been working with an oil based paint and now have a stain on your garments, you will want to work with the stain as soon as possible to ensure that you get as much out as possible.

Be sure to blot up as much of the excess liquid as you can. Don’t smear the paint by wiping it, this only makes the stain bigger and more difficult to fight. Just blot with a paper towel.

Use a liquid paint thinner to work on the stain. If your garment is dry clean only you can try to have your dry cleaner work on the stain but it will be dry by that time. Apply some thinner to the paint stained area, wetting the fabric and blotting the fabric to bring out the paint from the fibers. If this is a very unique or special article you might want to try the colorfast test before using the thinner on your fabric.

Hand washing the garment in a concentrated laundry detergent and water mixture and rubbing the stained area with additional laundry detergent after using the thinner, your stain will lighten and wash away.

Inspect to see if the stain is completely gone, and launder as usually as the instructions on the tag will say.
