Oil Paint. Tips to remove Oil Paint stains on carpets

Painting the walls and ceilings in your home with oil paints leaves your home refreshing, but if you have found an oil based paint spill in your home, use these tips to get it out.

When the paint is still wet, scrape up as much of the paint as you can using a spoon or butter knife, scraping the paint towards the center of the stain.

Blot the liquid using a paper towel to lift any moisture in the carpeting.  Now you are left with a colored stain in the carpeting.

Using your paper towel wet it with rubbing alcohol and dab the stained area where the oil based paint is.  Keep using clean parts of your cloth and adding rubbing alcohol to your cloth and dab the stained area.  Stop if you have removed all of the stain or if you are not bringing any more paint onto your towel.

Blot up any remaining moisture in the carpet with a towel.

Make a spray mixture of a tablespoon of clear dish liquid, with no bleach and a cup of water.  Spray this over the stained area and blot with a clean cloth.  Continue until you can’t bring up any more coloring from the stained area.

Rinse the stained area with clear warm water and a towel.  Blot up moisture and repeat until you have brought out all the rubbing alcohol and the soapsuds.

Allow the oil paint stained area to dry to see if all of the coloring is out of the carpet from the paint.  If you have a coloring in your carpeting yet, use the next step to bring out the remaining stains.

Spray hydrogen peroxide on the stained area and work it into the fibers using your fingers.  Let this dry and then re-spray it and blot it up.  The stain should be lightening, leaving a cleaned carpet.  Repeat if needed.
