If you are going to have creamed or mashed vegetables eg. potatoes, carrots etc. save on the energy bills and speed up the cooking time by slicing the vegetables as if you were making chips.
This cuts the cooking time in half.

If you slice potatoes for makng mashed potatoes the potatoes will absorb too much water. It is best to not try to save time and cook the potatoes whole with skin on, about 25 minutes. Wear gloves to remove skin while they are still quite hot. Quicker is often not better!
