Dog Food. Make your own Dog Food

Have you ever wondered what goes into commercial dog food? Well why not have a go at making your own. The following recipe will make a well-balanced diet for your pet.
To make 3lb/1.4kg.

  • 1 lb/450g minced beef (not lean) 2 eggs, hard-boiled
  • 2 1b/900g cooked rice
  • 6 slices white bread, crumbled
  • 2 teaspoons calcium carbonate (crushed antacid tablets)

Cook the meat in a covered pot until no longer pink, retaining the fat. Mix it thoroughly with the other ingredients in a medium-size bowl. The resulting mixture tends to be dry, so add water (not milk) as required.

I used to make my own dog food when we lived over seas. It was rice, chicken, veges (carrots, corn, brocolli, peas etc), and some oil. The dogs got very spoiled on it and wouldn't switch back to dry food when we moved back.

Antacids? Comments By: Noah on 2005-05-13
Rice isn't bad for dogs, but I really questions the need for antacids. I also question whether they could be harmful to dogs if eaten on a regular basis.

Rice is actually very good for dogs, much better than corn, especially if they have allergies or a sensitive stomach. Lamb and rice food is starting to be very popular.

I have a dog that has a soy allergy, my vet highly recomends rice for upset stomach mixed with chicken. She calls it
" brat food "

antacid Comments By: Anon on 2007-03-08
I think the antacid is just calcium carbonate, probably to replace the bone in a natural diet. Calcium is very important. I made my own food when my bitch was pregnant and queasy all the time, but i used calcium supplement for carnivores from my local reptile shop, this has a balanced phosphorus : calcium ratio. I didn't know you could use antacids though. . . but i believe there is a high phosphorus content in meat so maybe the balance is correct when mixed with meat.

brown rice is good for chow chows Comments By: anon on 2008-03-14
People PLEASE do NOT feed commercial pet foods to your pets!Through many trials, searching the web and experience, I found that the whole grain brown rice enhances my chow chows coat and helps his skin from developing hot spots. I add small amount of chicken, veggies, cottage cheese or homemade broth and a vitamin pill for dogs, namely Halo Pet daily greens. He is doing great. I also add sometimes small amounts of olive oil. Only pure and natural for him.

Not good! Comments By: b1gf00t on 2009-11-06
Dogs cannot digest cooked fat, even if it is drained off the meat will still retain some cooked fat. It is better to feed your dog uncooked meat ie. raw. It's how dogs eat meat naturally and it is more suited to their digestive system. Ever seen a wolf using a stove???? Neither have I.

Good recipe - although I would think twice about the tablet! There are plenty of vitamin tablets about for dogs and I would check with vet before giving anything extra with food. Sometimes too much of even a vitamin can cause problems so I would rather give none than too much that causes a problem.
I wish people would stop refering to wolves not having cooked food etc and to copy their diet. The only reason they eat what they do is because they have no-one to cook it for them - dont you think they would prefer our dogs diet? Why do you think they have short lives in the wild - bad diet is one reason you idiots! Listen to the experts and the vets - they are the ones that know best.
